RUG CARE: How to Make Your Rug Last for Years

Your rug isn’t just décor — it’s craftsmanship, culture, and texture you walk on daily. With the
right care, it will age beautifully and last for generations.

Daily & Weekly Rug Maintenance Tips:

● Vacuum regularly: Use a vacuum without rotating brushes or beater bars, especially for high-pile rugs. Vacuum in the direction of the weave.
● Rotate every 3–6 months: This ensures even exposure to light and foot traffic, helping to avoid fading and uneven wear.
● Blot spills immediately: Use a clean, dry cloth and gently blot from the edges toward the center. Avoid rubbing — it pushes the spill deeper.

● Avoid direct sunlight: If possible, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sun, as it may cause fading over time. Use blinds or rotate the rug periodically.
● Ventilate: Another effective way to clean a rug is to turn it upside down and beat it gently.
This removes all the lose yarn & dirt drops out. Make sure you do this in an open space /outdoors.

Deep Cleaning Tips:
● Professional cleaning: Have your rug professionally cleaned every 12–18 months depending on use.
● Spot cleaning: Use mild soap (no bleach or harsh chemicals) and cold water. Test any cleaner on a small hidden area first.

Vacuuming Advice:
● Regular vacuuming is crucial for maintaining your rug's condition, helping to remove surface dirt and prevent discoloration and staining over time.
● Avoid beater bars as they can damage rugs; use them on the mildest setting if necessary.
● Canister vacuums, brooms, sweeping, and hand-held attachments are more suitable for rugs.
● Strong suction vacuums might pull fibers out from the rug's base and are not recommended.
● Repeated vacuuming over edges and fringes can cause damage, so proceed with caution.

Tips for Storing Rugs Safely:
● Wrapping the Rug: Before storing, it's ideal to wrap your rug in either plastic or fabric to protect it.
● Proper Rolling: Instead of folding, roll the rug with the front side facing outwards. After rolling, cover it with a cloth to ensure further protection.
● Storage Environment: Keep the rolled rug in a dry area with good air circulation. Regularly cleaning the storage space can help deter bugs and insects.
●Avoiding Weight on Rugs: Refrain from placing any heavy items on your stored rug, as this could lead to potential damage

STORING YOUR RUG SAFELY

Whether you're moving, switching rugs seasonally, or storing a precious heirloom, proper storage is key to preserving its beauty.
Steps to Store a Rug Properly:
1. Clean it thoroughly - Vacuum both sides. If needed, get it professionally cleaned before storing.
2. Roll, don’t fold - Always roll your rug with the pile facing inward to protect the fibers. Never fold — it causes permanent creases.
3. Use breathable materials - Wrap your rug in cotton, muslin cloth, or brown craft paper. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture and can lead to mildew.
4. Store off the floor - Place on a raised surface or shelf in a cool, dry area. Avoid basements or attics where humidity and temperature fluctuate.
5. Protect against pests - Add natural repellents like dried lavender or cedar chips around the storage area. Avoid mothballs (they can smell and cause discoloration).

Pro Tip: Unroll and air out stored rugs every 6 months if possible, to maintain shape and
freshness
